Diagnostic Hearing Testing for Adults

A behavioral diagnostic hearing test takes place in a sound-treated booth and comprises of the audiologist presenting different stimuli to an individual to assess their ability to hear. The evaluation takes approximately 30-60 minutes.

How is a small child’s hearing assessed?

We provide diagnostic hearing evaluations for children of all ages and as early as two days after birth. The age of the child will determine which tests are necessary in order to establish the integrity of the child’s hearing system.

Hearing Protection

  • Hearing protection refers to measures used to protect the auditory system from damage caused by excessive noise exposure.

Hearing protection may be recommended for people who are regularly exposed to loud sound, whether through work, hobbies, music, sport, or recreational activities. Custom or standard hearing protection can help reduce the risk of noise-induced hearing loss while still allowing you to continue with the activities that are important to you

There is a variety of hearing protection available in order to best suit your level of noise exposure, your listening needs and your budget.
According to health and safety laws, individuals exposed to a certain level of noise daily or excessive noise sporadically, should be utilizing hearing protection devices. Hearing protection devices reduce the likelihood of hearing loss by minimizing the loudness of noise entering the ears.

These devices cover the outer ears. The inside of the cups is lined with a special foam which reduces incoming noise. Ear muffs may be used with ear plugs for maximum protection.

These may be pre-formed or custom-made. Pre-formed ear plugs come in different, pre-determined sizes and are immediately available for purchase. Foam ear plugs will expand to fill the ear canal; thereby sealing it off in part, from incoming noise. These may be disposable or reusable. Custom ear plugs can be made specifically to fit your ear canals and are generally more effective in minimizing your exposure to potentially harmful noise.

These devices cover the ear canal at its opening. They tend to provide less protection than ear muffs or ear plugs and are therefore seldom recommended.

Hearing Aid Fitting Process

At Shamim Ebrahim Inc., we understand that every person’s hearing needs are unique. Our hearing aid fitting process is designed to be patient-centred, ensuring that your hearing solutions are tailored to your lifestyle, communication needs, and personal preferences. We partner with you every step of the way to help you achieve the best possible hearing outcomes.

Following your comprehensive hearing assessment, your audiologist will discuss your results with you and determine whether hearing aids may be beneficial. This conversation usually takes place during your initial consultation.

Rather than focusing only on your hearing test results, we take time to understand how hearing difficulties affect your daily life, relationships, work environment, and social interactions. Together, we explore your listening challenges, communication goals, and expectations to determine the most appropriate hearing solution for you.

If hearing aids are recommended, your audiologist will explain the benefits of amplification and discuss whether one or two devices would provide the greatest benefit. Different hearing aid styles, features, and technology levels will be reviewed to help you make an informed decision. Because we work closely with multiple hearing aid manufacturers, we are able to recommend the device best suited to your individual hearing loss and lifestyle needs.

If required, an impression of your ear will be taken to ensure an optimal fit.

Once your hearing aids arrive at the practice, one of our receptionists will contact you to schedule your fitting appointment.

During this visit, your hearing aids are carefully programmed according to your hearing assessment results and adjusted to ensure a comfortable physical fit. Our goal is to provide amplification that is both effective and comfortable, allowing you to hear more clearly in a variety of listening environments.

Your audiologist will guide you through the use of your hearing aids, including how to insert and remove them, charging or battery management, cleaning procedures, and general care and maintenance. We encourage questions and provide practical guidance to help you feel confident using your new devices.

Adjusting to hearing aids is a process, and your experiences in real-world listening environments are an important part of achieving the best results.

At your follow-up appointment, your audiologist will discuss your listening experiences and make any necessary fine-tuning adjustments to optimise comfort and speech understanding. Additional accessories or assistive listening devices may also be discussed if they could further improve your hearing experience.

If you decide to proceed with purchasing your hearing aids, we will compile a detailed motivation for your medical aid, where applicable.
